Why Every Birth Deserves to Be Held With Hands That Listen

Birth is not just a moment — it’s a memory that lives in a body forever. And I believe, with every part of me, that how we’re made to feel in that moment… matters.
I still think about a client I supported not long ago. She was walking the halls during an unmedicated induction, stopping to breathe through each wave. Her partner was by her side, and I was behind her, applying counterpressure, whispering reminders to trust her breath and her body. There was a stillness in the air, even in the intensity. And when she finally held her baby — strong, tearful, and triumphant — she looked up and said, “I couldn’t have done this without being reminded I could.”
That’s the power of being truly seen and supported.
Who I Am and Why I Do This Work
My name is Debbie Thomas, and I’m a birth doula, postpartum guide, and the heart behind Guiding Hands Birth Services. But more than that — I’m someone who believes every birthing person deserves to feel safe, heard, and honored in the most intimate moments of their story.
I started this work not just out of passion, but out of witnessing firsthand how much support can change everything — how presence and care can shape a birth experience for years to come.
What a Doula Really Offers
A doula isn’t there to take the place of your doctor or midwife.
We don’t make decisions for you or speak over you. What we do is walk alongside you, quietly and consistently — offering comfort, advocacy, and a steady presence so that you feel more anchored in your own power.
Whether it’s suggesting positions in labor, helping your partner feel confident in their role, or simply reminding you to breathe — we hold space for the sacredness of your experience.
My Approach: Gentle, Personalized, Present
At Guiding Hands, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Every family I support has a different story, a different need, and a different rhythm.
My role is never to direct, but to gently walk with you — with open hands and a listening heart.
I believe:
- Informed choices lead to empowered births.
- Softness and strength can exist together.
- Your body already knows — sometimes it just needs someone to remind it.
Let’s Stay Connected
If you're preparing for birth and dreaming of a more grounded, connected experience — I’d be honored to support you.
Whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, or something in between, your story deserves to be held with care.
With love and open hands,
Debbie
