Understanding Neonatal Thermoregulation: Mechanisms, Importance, and Challenges
Neonatal thermoregulation refers to the complex physiological process through which newborns maintain a stable body temperature. This function is especially crucial in the first few hours and days after birth, as neonates—particularly those born prematurely—are highly vulnerable to temperature imbalances. Effective neonatal thermoregulation plays a pivotal role in reducing risks associated with hypothermia, sepsis, respiratory distress, and long-term developmental issues.
Newborns, especially preterm infants, have limited energy reserves, a high body surface area-to-weight ratio, and underdeveloped skin, all of which make them prone to rapid heat loss. They lack the ability to shiver, and thus rely heavily on non-shivering thermogenesis—primarily through brown adipose tissue—to generate body heat. However, this mechanism alone is often insufficient in clinical settings, necessitating external support.
